How To Choose A Flower Girl Dress
There is nothing more exciting than having one’s child chosen to be a flower girl at a wedding. They always make a delightful picture as they walk down the aisle, stewing rose petals or some other kind of flower along the way. There is no age set for a flower girl so one may see a toddler or someone around six or seven. Picking the right girl dress is important.
In ordering or making a flower girl dress, there are certain procedures that must be followed. The bride should be consulted for her preferences. Some prefer that the flower girl wear white, other’s want something that reflect the bride’s colors, but in an innocent kind of way. Those in white usually have a wide ribbon at the waist that is the bride’s color or the color of the bridesmaid dresses.
It is important that the dress be comfortable. Unfortunately, there have been pictures of little girls walking down the aisle twisting or pulling at their dress. This is because there was something underneath was stiff and itching her. Usually the discomfort is reflected in her face.
The length of the flower girl’s dress is about half way between the knee and the ankle, although on some occasions the bride wants it to be full length. If it is to be full length, care should be taken to be sure it is not so long as to cause her to trip over it. Speaking of tripping, she should never wear tight or uncomfortable shoes or anything with heels. The best bet for the shoes is ballet slippers. They are soft, easy on the feet and comfortable to walk in.
The time of year the wedding is to be held should definitely influence the type of dress purchased. It would never do to have a velvet dress if the wedding is held in the middle of August. One the other hand a very sheer one would not be appropriate for a December Wedding. In those cases the child would either be too hot or too cold.
In choosing a flower girl dress one should be careful regarding the material it is made of. It should be remembered that this dress might possibly be put away and saved over the years so it is important that its construction is made of high quality fabric. There are a number of things wrong with cheap material, such as not hanging correctly, uneven hems and other things. For this special, and probably one time, experience the dress should reflect the importance of the occasion.
The type of wedding will influence the type of dress purchased. A formal, black tie wedding would be different than one held in a flower garden setting so this should also be considered. However, once again, confer with the bride and follow her wishes.
This is the experience of a lifetime, not only for the flower girl but for the parents as well. Seeing their child walk down the aisle so carefully always brings a sense of pride. To make sure this goes without a hitch it is important that this be practiced more than once. Sometimes things are forgotten when a child is told what to do and there is a crowd around. Going back to where the ceremony is being held and, in the quiet, go over the routine again will help them remember what to do.
